Your Supply Chain’s Secret Weapon: A 3-Step Quality Check for Lenzing Fabrics
Let’s be honest. If you’re specifying Lenzing fibers—whether it’s TENCEL™ Lyocell, Modal, or EcoVero Viscose—you’re not buying a commodity. You’re buying a story of sustainability, softness, and technical performance. The problem? That story can fall apart fast if the finished fabric doesn’t match what you ordered.
I’ve spent the last 4 years reviewing fabrics for a mid-sized apparel brand. We do about 50,000 units a year, mostly in knit tops and woven shirts. And I’ve seen what happens when a “Lenzing” shipment arrives and the handfeel is wrong, or the shrinkage is off. It’s not just a reject—it’s a delayed launch, a pissed-off retailer, and a $22,000 redo.
So here’s the checklist I use. Three steps. Takes about an hour on a production roll. If your mill pushes back on any of them, that’s a red flag.

This is for any brand owner, sourcing manager, or product developer who is specifying Lenzing fibers (EcoVero, TENCEL™ Lyocell, Micro Modal, Modal) and wants to verify they’re getting what they paid for—before it’s cut into 2,000 units.
It’s not for one-off sample orders. It’s for production bulk, when the time and money on the line is real.
Step 1: The “Burn & Bleach” Verification
The test: Take a small swatch from three different places on the roll. Burn it. Then bleach a separate sample.
What you’re looking for: A real regenerated cellulose fiber (like Lyocell or Modal) will burn cleanly, leaving a fine ash. It will also dissolve or weaken significantly in a strong bleach solution (like 10% sodium hypochlorite). Polyester, on the other hand, will melt and bead up. Cotton will burn but leave a fluffy ash and won’t dissolve in bleach.
Why this matters: People assume “Lenzing” is just a trademark. The reality is that the fiber base—Lyocell vs. Modal vs. standard viscose—has very different properties. I caught a batch last year where the mill claimed it was “TENCEL™ Lyocell” for 20,000 yards of denim shorts. A quick burn test showed it was standard viscose. That’s a $14,000 difference in raw material cost, plus the performance issue (viscose wets out faster, pills more). Never expected a mill to try that. Turns out, they were hoping we’d just check the label.
From the outside, it looks like you need a lab to verify this. The reality is a lighter and a bottle of bleach will catch 90% of substitution attempts.
Step 2: The “Dimensional Stability” Quick Check
The test: Cut a 10x10 inch square. Wash and dry it according to the care label instructions. Measure again.
What you’re looking for: TENCEL™ Lyocell should shrink less than 3% in both directions. Modal is usually under 4%. If you’re seeing 5% or more, something is wrong with the finishing process (over-relaxation, or too much tension in the tenter frame). On a 50,000-unit order for modal tank tops, 5% shrinkage means the garment will be a full size smaller after the first wash.
The surprise wasn’t the high shrinkage. It was that the mill’s internal spec was “3%.” They had the test data, they just ignored it for our bulk because they were behind schedule. So now every purchase order I write includes a 10-yard “hold” on the first production roll until I get my own shrinkage results. That’s an extra 2 days in lead time, but it’s saved us from at least three major launches in the last 18 months.
Step 3: The “Fiber Maturity & Pilling” Assessment
The test: Use a Martindale wear tester (or a simple “brush test” with a standard shoe brush, 50 strokes in one direction). Evaluate pilling visually on a 1-5 scale.
What you’re looking for: We aim for a minimum grade of 3.5 on Lenzing Micro Modal and TENCEL™ Lyocell. If you’re getting a 2 or below, the fiber quality is poor, or the yarn twist is too low. This is a huge issue for micro shorts denim or modal tank tops where surface friction is high.
In Q1 2024, we received a batch of 8,000 units for a “micro shorts denim” program. The Lenzing Lyocell content was listed at 60% with 40% cotton. The pilling came back as a 2. The vendor claimed it was “within industry standard.” I’d argue that’s not good enough for a $68 retail short. We rejected the batch. They redid it with a higher twist yarn and the pilling grade jumped to a 4. The cost increase was $0.12 per yard. On 30,000 yards, that’s $3,600 for measurably better perception. Worth it.
I’d argue that is where most quality checks miss the mark—they focus on color and width, but ignore the long-term wear characteristics that actually drive returns and customer complaints.
Common Mistakes & Things to Watch For
Don’t rely on just the hangtag. A “TENCEL™” hangtag is easy to fake. You need the actual fiber certificate from your mill for each lot number. I’ve seen hangtags from one mill on fabric from another.
Check the selvage. A real Lenzing fabric will often have a manufacturer code printed on the edge. If it’s missing or looks wrong, ask for the mill’s batch record.
Test the first production roll, not the sample. The sample yardage is often made with extra care. The bulk is where shortcuts happen. I always reserve the right to pull a 1-yard sample from the first production roll, at my cost, before the full order ships.
Watch for “Lenzing modal” vs. “generic modal.” They are not the same. The generic stuff might be cheaper, but it lacks the consistent fiber quality and the EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) certifications of the real Lenzing product. Your sustainability claims are only as good as your supply chain.
Ultimately, this checklist isn’t about being the “quality police.” It’s about protecting your brand’s promise. If you’re paying for Lenzing, verify it. The cost of a redo is almost always higher than the cost of the test.
