Scenario 1: You need softness, drape, and next-to-skin comfort
This is the classic Lenzing Modal conversation. If you're developing underwear, loungewear, bedsheets, or babywear, you're probably looking at Lenzing Modal or MicroModal.
What is Lenzing Modal made of?
According to Lenzing (lenzing.com), TENCEL Modal is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from beech wood. The wood pulp is processed into fiber using Lenzing's Edelweiss process, which recovers a high percentage of chemicals. MicroModal is a finer version of the same basic idea. It's not cotton. It's not silk. It's a cellulosic fiber engineered for softness and moisture management.
Is it natural? Kind of. The raw material is wood, which is natural. But the fiber is man-made through a chemical process. That's true for all regenerated cellulosic fibers. If a supplier tells you it's '100% natural,' ask them to define natural. Then ask for the fiber certification.
What I'd do
Start with a small trial. For a 160-180 gsm jersey, 30/1 or 40/1 Modal blends are common. Test shrinkage first. Here's the insider knowledge most suppliers won't volunteer: ECOVERO and REFIBRA are not the same thing. ECOVERO is a branded viscose fiber. REFIBRA is a technology used in TENCEL Lyocell to incorporate recycled cotton scraps. A supplier might market 'EcoVero x Refibra fabric' as a combined eco-story. That doesn't automatically mean the fabric contains both. It might. It might not. You need the fiber content sheet and the Lenzing certification.
According to Lenzing, ECOVERO branded viscose is produced with lower environmental impact compared to generic viscose, based on Higg MSI data. REFIBRA technology is used in TENCEL Lyocell fibers to include recycled feedstock. Verify current percentages and certifications at lenzing.com, because these product lines evolve.
What I'd do
Ask for three documents before you approve anything:
- Lenzing Fiber Identification or certification showing the fiber is actually Lenzing-branded
- A transaction certificate or chain-of-custody document from the mill
- The exact percentage of recycled content, if REFIBRA is claimed

If you search 'outdoor white fabric' and land on Lenzing because you want a natural feel, pause. Cellulosic fibers like Modal and Lyocell are not the default choice for permanent outdoor exposure. They can be used in blends, and they can perform well with the right finishes. But white outdoor fabric has three enemies: UV light, moisture, and mildew. White shows every one of them.
What I'd do
If you want Lenzing fiber in an outdoor white fabric, treat it as an engineered blend, not a single-fiber solution. Ask for:
- AATCC 16 colorfastness to light results (verify current test version with AATCC)
- AATCC 30 mildew resistance results, if the fabric will stay damp
- Water repellency and soil release finishes
- Accelerated weathering test data, if available
I don't have hard data on industry-wide yellowing rates for cellulosic outdoor fabrics. But based on our orders, I can tell you this: in 2019, we used 100% TENCEL Lyocell for outdoor white cushion covers at a hotel terrace. They felt amazing. If you're sourcing for a silk-like look, you have options. Lenzing Modal or TENCEL Lyocell can be woven into a satin construction. That gives you a smooth, draped fabric without the price and care requirements of silk. Is it the same? No. Silk has a distinctive hand and a protein fiber story. If your customer wants silk, Lenzing won't replace it. If your customer wants the look and feel of satin at a different cost, Lenzing fibers are worth testing.
Now, 'fiber near me.' I get the instinct. Local sourcing can reduce lead times and shipping costs. But Lenzing doesn't sell fiber direct to most small brands. It sells through authorized distributors and mills. A local converter might be great for sampling, but that doesn't mean they're an authorized Lenzing partner.
What most people don't realize is that 'Lenzing certified' is not the same as 'contains Lenzing fiber.' I once drove 90 minutes to a local 'fiber supplier' who turned out to be a converter with no Lenzing certification. They had some Modal blend in stock, but it wasn't what we needed. Wasted day, zero savings.

- What can you verify? If you can't get the fiber certification or test reports, assume the claim is marketing, not fact.
If you're still unsure, start with a small trial order. Test the fabric in the actual conditions it will face. That's not the fastest path on paper. But it's faster than replacing 2,400 pieces after a failed launch.
