The conventional wisdom is that modal is always worth the premium. My experience with our specific customers suggests otherwise. For decorative pillow covers that rarely get washed, regular viscose performed fine at a lower cost. For anything that touches skin daily, modal's durability justified the price difference.

Q5: What should I know about cotton yarn cones before ordering?

Cotton yarn cones are the wound packages of yarn used in weaving and knitting. Key specs to verify: yarn count (Ne or Nm), twist per inch, and cone weight. I assumed "same count" meant identical across vendors. Didn't verify. Turned out each mill had slightly different twist standards, which affected the finished fabric's hand feel.

Q6: Are Lenzing fibers actually better than the alternatives?

For certain applications, yes. TENCEL™ lyocell has better moisture management than standard viscose. EcoVero has traceability that generic viscose lacks. MicroModal is genuinely softer than most competitors' modal.

But "better" depends on what you're making. For a budget-tier product where the customer won't check certifications, a standard viscose from a reliable mill might serve you just as well. The vendor who told me "this isn't our strength—here's who does it better" earned my trust for everything else.

Q7: When should I not use Lenzing fibers?

When your client's budget doesn't support the premium, or when the end product doesn't benefit from the fiber's specific advantages. I've seen colleagues default to TENCEL™ for every order because "it's the best." That's not strategy—that's just spending more without a reason.

If you need a workhorse fabric for a product that won't be marketed on sustainability or hand feel, a quality generic viscose from a vetted mill will do the job. Save the Lenzing premium for the orders where it actually shows.
