Viscose vs Rayon Is a Trap Question—What I Learned Buying Bedding for Corporate Guest Suites
As the office administrator for a 200-person design firm, I handle purchasing for everything from printer paper to the bedding in our three client guest suites. Roughly $180,000 a year across 25 vendors. It's not glamorous, but it's mine.
When the request came through for "brown and pink bedding" for the renovated guest suites, I thought I knew exactly what to order. High-thread-count cotton, maybe a cotton linen blend for that textured, natural look the partners wanted. Easy.
Then my procurement spreadsheet led me down a rabbit hole: viscose, rayon, TENCEL™, Modal, EcoVero. Are these the same thing? Different things? "Natural" or not? Trying to figure out which material to spec for the guest rooms ate two days of my life, and I almost made an expensive mistake.
The Surface Problem: "What Is Viscose Even?"
Let me start where I started: confused. One vendor pushed "viscose rayon bedding." Another advertised "TENCEL™ Lyocell." A third told me "Modal is basically a nicer rayon."
The most frustrating part: every sales rep gave me a different explanation of what these fibers actually were. You'd think industry professionals would use consistent terminology, but interpretation varies wildly between manufacturers.
The Deep Issue: Viscose and Rayon Are the Same Fiber
Here's the thing I didn't understand until about six hours of research: in the US, "rayon" is the federal trade term. In most of the rest of the world, it's called "viscose." Same material, different name, depending on which side of the ocean you're on. "Viscose rayon" on a label is basically saying "viscose viscose."
But it gets deeper. All of these fibers—viscose, rayon, modal, lyocell—come from wood pulp. They're all "regenerated cellulose fibers." The base ingredient is the same. What differs is the manufacturing process.
I'm not 100% sure on the chemistry specifics, so take this with a grain of salt. But my working understanding, from talking to textile reps and reading through product documentation:
- Conventional viscose (rayon): wood pulp dissolved with chemicals, then extruded into fiber. It's a roughly century-old process and, depending on the mill, can be pretty hard on the environment.
- Modal: an upgraded viscose process that extracts more cellulose, producing a stronger, more durable fiber. Sits in the middle tier.
- Lyocell (TENCEL™ is the best-known brand): uses a closed-loop process that recovers around 99% of the solvent. Smooth fiber structure makes it breathable, soft, but strong. Premium tier.
- EcoVero: Lenzing's certified sustainable viscose. Same fiber chemistry as viscose, but produced with lower emissions and water use, plus full supply-chain traceability. Carries the EU Ecolabel.
Is Lenzing Modal natural? It's wood-derived, so natural in origin. But so is conventional rayon. The "natural" label is kind of a marketing question as much as a material one. I've never fully understood why the industry doesn't standardize its terminology. If someone has insight, I'd love to hear it.
What the Confusion Cost Us
Here's where this got real. I was comparing quotes for guest room bedding, and the price spread for seemingly identical "viscose" products was enormous.
One vendor quoted $35 per bedding set. Another quoted $90 for what looked like the same fiber specification. At first I assumed the second vendor was padding their margin. Not quite. The $35 option was conventional rayon from an uncertified mill. The $90 option was EcoVero viscose from a certified supply chain. Same generic fiber type, completely different production standards—and, as I discovered, different quality in practice.
I ordered samples from both. The $35 rayon sheets felt cheap. They wrinkled badly, didn't breathe well, and after three wash cycles they started pilling. Our housekeeping team cycles the guest suite bedding roughly 10-12 times a month per suite. Maybe 15 during peak travel season, I'd have to check the logs. These $35 sheets were borderline disposable.
The thing about the "cheaper" option: it wasn't actually cheaper. I did a rough cost-per-use calculation afterward. The $35 sets ended up around $0.87 per use. The $90 sets lasted a full year of guest turnover without significant wear—around $0.42 per use. Don't hold me to these exact numbers; they're estimates from our own experience, not an auditor's report. But the magnitude is right.
And the $50 difference per set translated to noticeably better guest feedback. When I switched, comment cards mentioning "comfortable bedding" jumped by roughly 23%. That's a squishy metric, I know, but it tracks with something I saw years ago in our print purchasing: the cheapest supplier is rarely the most cost-effective once quality issues and reprints are factored in.
The Greenwashing Trap
The second problem was the "natural" label.
Several vendors marketed "100% natural cotton bedding" that turned out to be viscose rayon with optical brighteners. Viscose is wood-based, so one could argue it's "from nature." But it's chemically processed. Calling it "natural" the way you'd call organic cotton "natural" is misleading.
We got burned once by a vendor whose "natural" sheets caused a guest to react. I had to explain to the VP of operations why I'd trusted a supplier's marketing language instead of verifying the material composition. That's not a fun conversation. Now I check the fiber breakdown on every product spec sheet, and I look for third-party verification—OEKO-TEX, FSC, EU Ecolabel—before I trust environmental claims.
This is where Lenzing's documentation helped. They publish detailed product information and sustainability reports on their website (lenzing.com), and EcoVero claims can be verified through the EU Ecolabel registry. Not every viscose producer offers that kind of transparency. I've learned to treat missing documentation as a red flag.
The Solution: What Actually Worked
If you're stuck at "viscose vs rayon which is better," here's the shortcut I wish someone had given me:
"Stop comparing fiber names. Compare manufacturing processes."
Rayon and viscose are the same material. That question is a trap. The real question is how the fiber was produced and what quality standards the mill follows.
For our guest suites, I settled on a mix:
- EcoVero viscose sheets and pillowcases. Breathable, smooth, and held up well in testing. Is Lenzing EcoVero viscose breathable? In our experience, yes—more breathable than the plain cotton sheets we'd used before, which guests seemed to appreciate.
- Cotton linen blend duvet covers. The linen brings a casual elegance that works with the brown-and-pink palette the partners chose, and the cotton gives it a softer hand feel.
I also learned that dye quality matters as much as the fiber. Cheap dyes fade—our first batch of blush pink pillowcases came out of the wash looking like faded coral. Better-quality fibers like TENCEL™ and Modal accept dye more evenly and hold color through repeated washing. The brown-and-pink bedding has now been through roughly 45 wash cycles and still looks presentable.
Part of me wants to just buy cotton for everything and sidestep the fiber-label maze altogether. But another part knows that the best-performing bedding we've ever had uses these newer fibers. I'm at peace with the compromise: pick the right fiber for each use case, verify the claims, and spend where it shows.
The Bottom Line
The textile industry's terminology is a mess. "Rayon" and "viscose" are the same fiber. TENCEL™ is a brand name for Lyocell. Modal is a fiber type with its own distinctive qualities. And "natural" is more of a marketing claim than a technical specification.
But the deep dive was worth it. The quality upgrade changed how our clients perceive the firm. We went from "the place with decent generic hotel bedding" to "the place that really thought about the guest experience." When a client spends the night and mentions the bedding at breakfast, it signals that we care about details. That's the part that really matters.
The $50 difference per set translated to noticeably better client retention. Not the kind of metric you can fake—or afford to ignore.
