6. How does 20D nylon fabric compare to TENCEL for activewear?

Trade-offs:

  • 20D nylon: Higher strength-to-weight ratio, faster drying, but plastic-based, can feel clammy against skin.
  • TENCEL Lyocell: Better moisture absorption (not just wicking), smoother thermal regulation, but less durable in high-abrasion zones (like knee patches).

The best activewear I've seen blends them: a TENCEL base layer for comfort with 20D nylon paneling where you need stretch and abrasion resistance. It's not an either-or.

7. Is Lenzing Modal worth the premium over generic modal?

From a quality perspective? In most cases, yes.

Generic modal (often made by commodity producers in Southeast Asia) has higher batch-to-batch variability. I've tested "modal" that was actually a viscose-modal blend with less than 30% modal content. That's not industry standard—it's cutting corners.

Lenzing modal is consistent. The fiber properties—denier, tenacity, elongation—are predictable. For a factory producing 50,000 units on a tight schedule, consistent input means fewer rejects.

I went back and forth on this for a large cardigan order in 2022. The generic modal was 18% cheaper. We tested both against the delamination requirements. Lenzing lost less than 2% weight after 5 washes; the generic lost 7%. That difference would've caused returns and chargebacks. The 18% savings wasn't worth the risk.
