I coordinate fabric sourcing for a textile company. In the last seven years, I've handled 200+ rush orders for apparel brands—including a 48-hour turnaround for a resort-wear launch and a substitute fabric call at 11 PM before a trade show (not a fun call). When clients are in a hurry, they ask the same questions about Lenzing fibers: Is EcoVero actually better? Is Lyocell like linen? Does viscose shed microplastics? Here are the ones I answer most.

What exactly is Lenzing?
Lenzing is an Austrian fiber manufacturer. They make regenerated cellulose fibers from wood pulp, not from petroleum. The brand names you'll see are TENCEL™ Lyocell, TENCEL™ Modal, MicroModal, and EcoVero Viscose.
People use Lenzing as a generic category, but it's a specific supplier. A fabric can be made with 100% Lenzing™ EcoVero™ viscose, or 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell, or a blend. The mill has to be licensed to use those names. If a supplier says Lenzing-type or like TENCEL, that's not Lenzing. It might be perfectly fine, but it's not the same supply chain.
What does 100% Lenzing™ EcoVero™ viscose mean?
It means the viscose fiber in the fabric comes from Lenzing's EcoVero program. EcoVero is a viscose staple fiber produced from certified wood sources, with a lower environmental footprint than generic viscose. It also offers traceability through Lenzing's supply chain.
But here's the part that matters in a rush: EcoVero is a trademark, not a generic term. You need the mill's Lenzing certification or shipment documentation to label it that way. And environmental claims need evidence. Per FTC guidance (ftc.gov), an unqualified eco-friendly claim is hard to substantiate. So ask for the data.
I didn't always do this. I once skipped the certificate check because the price was good. The lot arrived without traceability documents, the client's compliance team rejected it, and we paid $800 in overnight lab testing to sort out what should have taken 10 minutes to verify. Now the certificate comes before the purchase order.
Is Lenzing Lyocell fabric good for a linen tshirt women's line?
I get this one a lot. Lenzing Lyocell fabric is not linen, and it won't behave like linen. Linen is made from flax; it has a crisp hand feel, visible slubs, and a dry texture. Lyocell is smooth, drapey, and more fluid. The hand feel is totally different.
If you're designing a linen tshirt women's collection, 100% Lyocell will feel different on the body. But a linen/Lyocell blend can work beautifully. A 55% linen / 45% Lyocell mix keeps the linen texture, reduces wrinkling, and gives the garment some movement. I sourced that blend for a small women's resort brand last spring, and it sold through well.
What does modal response spectrum analysis have to do with fabric?
Nothing. Same word, completely different meaning.
Modal response spectrum analysis is an engineering method for estimating how structures respond to vibrations, usually earthquakes. If you're a structural engineer looking for eigenfrequencies and response spectra, this article won't help you.
In textiles, modal is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from beechwood. Lenzing TENCEL™ Modal and MicroModal are known for softness, drape, and color retention. The only shared thing is the word modal.

Does viscose release microplastics?
The short answer is: it can shed microfibers, but viscose is wood-based cellulose, not plastic. It doesn't shed the same kind of synthetic microplastic fibers that polyester and nylon do. And if those fibers aren't coated with chemical finishes, they're biodegradable in a way that synthetic microplastics are not.
So a defensible label is: wood-based fibers shed cellulose microfibers, not plastic microfibers. Zero shedding is not defensible. Per the FTC Green Guides, you have to substantiate environmental claims like biodegradable, especially if the garment also contains a synthetic thread or trim.
I don't have hard data on every Lenzing grade's shedding rate in every wash cycle. Based on the mill test reports I've seen, TENCEL Lyocell performs well in microfiber retention tests. Ask your supplier for the actual report.
Which Lenzing fiber should you use: Modal, Lyocell, or EcoVero?
When I'm triaging a rush order, I ask three questions:
- What hand feel do you need? Modal is super soft and drapey. Lyocell is a bit sturdier. EcoVero is a more sustainable viscose with a classic viscose drape.
- What performance matters? Lyocell has good wet strength, so it holds up better in washing. Modal is often blended with cotton for comfort and stability.
- What certification do you need? If the retail buyer asks for 100% Lenzing™ EcoVero™ viscose, you need EcoVero. If they ask for lyocell, you need a licensed Lyocell supplier.
My experience is based on about 200 mid-range apparel orders, mostly knit tops and dresses. If you're producing luxury denim or performance activewear, your mechanical specs will matter more than my anecdote.
Should you trust a generalist supplier with Lenzing?
I used to think one-stop shop was a plus. Then I watched a generalist marketing rep approve a production sample without checking whether the lyocell was Lenzing-certified. The sample looked right, but the documentation wasn't there.
Now I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits. The supplier who says this isn't our strength—here's who does it better—earns my trust for everything else. A generalist who promises every fiber, every certification, and every lead time will eventually overpromise.
For Lenzing specifically, use a licensed mill or converter. They have access to the fiber, the trademark program, and the paperwork for audits. If a vendor says it's basically TENCEL, it's not. Run.
