Lenzing Fiber: What It Is, Why Biodegradable Claims Matter, and How to Verify Them

Lenzing is a fiber manufacturer, not a fabric. If a label says 'Lenzing' or 'TENCEL', it tells you the source of the fiber, not the weave or weight. Lenzing makes wood-based cellulose fibers - TENCEL lyocell, TENCEL modal, Lenzing EcoVero viscose, and MicroModal - and mills use those fibers to make clothing, bedding, and upholstery. For brands under deadline pressure to meet a sustainability claim, biodegradable fibers Lenzing EcoVero are a stronger starting point than generic rayon or polyester. But the word biodegradable only means something if the finished fabric hasn't been coated with synthetic finishes and you can prove it.

I coordinate rush orders for textile brands, and I've handled more than 200 rush orders in six years. In March 2024, 36 hours before a bedding brand had to present to a major retailer, their sustainability claim became the kind of problem that makes procurement people go grey. The fiber was already EcoVero, but no one had the paperwork. We got the Lenzing certification sent over, rewrote two lines of claim copy, and the presentation went ahead. That experience changed how I evaluate fibers now.

What exactly is 'Lenzing fabric'?

The phrase 'what fabric is Lenzing?' comes up a lot. The honest answer: there is no fabric called Lenzing. There are fabrics made from Lenzing fibers. Lyocell and modal are not synthetic polymers; they are regenerated cellulose from wood pulp. When a mill says 'TENCEL', it usually means the fabric uses Lenzing lyocell. If you are comparing hand feel, Lenzing fibers tend to drape well and manage moisture differently than cotton or polyester.

Within the Lenzing family, the fibers are not interchangeable. TENCEL lyocell is often used for clothing and bedding because it is strong even when wet. TENCEL modal and MicroModal are smoother and finer, which is why premium brands use them for next-to-skin garments. EcoVero is a branded viscose meant to replace conventional viscose in more general textile applications. Each fiber can be useful, but you need to know which one you are looking at when a supplier says 'Lenzing.'

Biodegradable fibers: Lenzing EcoVero and the fine print

EcoVero is Lenzing's branded viscose. It is wood-based viscose with a lower environmental footprint than conventional viscose, based on Lenzing's published technical data. It is also marketed as biodegradable. But here is where I've become cynical: a fiber being biodegradable does not automatically make the garment biodegradable. Sew it with polyester thread, add a nylon zipper, or apply a polyurethane coating, and you no longer have a product that degrades the way a loose fiber would in soil.

When I say 'biodegradable fibers Lenzing EcoVero,' I mean the fiber itself. The finished product is a different conversation. The most frustrating part of this business is seeing brands overclaim because a supplier said 'it's eco' without showing test reports. You'd think a material safety data sheet would be enough, but it does not prove biodegradation. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov/green-guides, 16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims need to be substantiated and qualified if the whole product doesn't meet the claim. So if a brand wants to put 'biodegradable' on a hangtag, ask for the exact test standard and the exact scope of the claim.

What about Harlequin Moriko bedding?

In home textiles, fiber choice is often invisible. A collection like Harlequin Moriko bedding may get chosen for its pattern, but the feel comes from the fiber structure. Lenzing fibers show up in premium bedding because they breathe and feel cool. I cannot tell you the exact composition of a specific Harlequin Moriko product without the spec sheet, and neither should you trust a product photo. If a supplier tells you a bedding line is 'Lenzing,' ask which Lenzing fiber. Lyocell, modal, and EcoVero all behave differently in washing, drape, and wear.

A bedding fabric can also be 100% Lenzing fiber and still have a chemical finish that changes how it behaves. That is the kind of detail that only appears in the technical spec, not in the sales description. For a home textile project, the difference between a bedding line that is 'just' a pretty pattern and one that is genuinely better to sleep under often comes down to fiber selection and fabric construction.

Carbon fiber rifle and dietary fiber: two search detours

If you arrived here looking for a carbon fiber rifle, this is not that kind of fiber. Carbon fiber for rifles uses synthetic precursors, usually PAN-based, not wood cellulose. Lenzing is not in the rifle business. And if you searched 'what foods have fiber in it,' you're looking for dietary fiber: beans, oats, berries, broccoli. Both terms share a word, but the chemistry is different. This article is about textile fiber.

How I vet a rush order when the claim is 'biodegradable'

It took me six years and about 200 rush orders to understand that a supplier relationship matters more than a supplier's list of machines. But when the claim is biodegradable, I use a fixed checklist:

  • Ask for the fiber certificate, not the fabric sample.
  • Ask what finishes, dyes, and threads are used.
  • Ask whether the claim applies to the fiber or the final product.
  • Ask which standard the test followed.

When I compared generic viscose and Lenzing EcoVero side by side, the difference was not obvious by touch. It showed up in the documentation and in the supplier's willingness to answer those questions. Generic viscose suppliers often cannot tell you where the wood came from. EcoVero comes with chain-of-custody documentation. There is something satisfying about handing a retailer the exact certificate they need, especially after a 36-hour scramble.

Last quarter alone, I helped process 47 rush orders with a 95% on-time delivery rate. Almost every problem we hit traced back to a missing document or a vague claim. Once we started using Lenzing's supply chain paperwork as the anchor, the conversations got easier. That is the practical value of a brand fiber: it comes with evidence.

The boundary nobody mentions

Lenzing fibers are not automatically compostable after they are sewn into a garment. The fiber can be biodegradable under certain conditions, but the real product is a combination of materials. If you are paying more for a sustainable fiber, do not forget the trims. To be fair, polyester still makes sense in some technical products, and I'm not here to say every brand should switch. But if a client says biodegradable is a requirement, Lenzing EcoVero gives you a cleaner story than generic viscose, as long as the whole product passes.
