Why the Label Isn't Telling You What You Need to Know
From the outside, this looks like a simple care issue: rayon is delicate, don't dry it. The reality is more uncomfortable. Most people don't know what's actually in the fabric they're buying, because the fiber label is doing a terrible job of telling them.
Here's what you need to know: under the US FTC's Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, "rayon" is the generic name for a whole family of fibers made from regenerated cellulose. Three very different fiber types live under that one word:
- Viscose — the most common, and the most sensitive to water and heat
- Modal — stronger when wet, holds up better in mechanical washing
- Lyocell — a newer generation made via closed-loop processing; it behaves much closer to cotton than to the "rayon" you're probably picturing
All three can legally say "rayon" on a label in the US. So a dress made with 96% Lenzing™ EcoVero™ viscose and a blouse made from unverified generic viscose can both say "rayon" — but they do not survive the washer and dryer the same way.
People assume the lower-cost rayon is just "cheaper rayon." The real problem isn't that polyester exists; it's that people keep choosing it over bio-based fibers because they've been burned by a "rayon" blouse that fell apart. The industry failed to explain what it was selling.
The Real Cost: Shrunk Dresses, Returns, and Wasted Sustainability
Let's talk actual numbers.
For consumers: a linen strapless dress from a mid-market brand runs $80–$150. If it's mostly generic viscose, a single 20-minute dryer cycle at Medium heat can shrink it 3%–7% and twist the seams. An $80 dress becomes a $0 asset. The dress wasn't necessarily badly made — the fiber and the expectations simply didn't match.
For apparel brands: care-related returns are one of the quiet killers. At a 4%–5% return rate, they start eating the margin of a full production run.
